I am not an expert on love or relationships. However, I can share my personal experiences with you and pass along the advice my parents have given me over the years.
First and foremost, my Mom has always taught me that nobody else can make me happy. In order to experience a relationship for what it truly is, you must love yourself first. Many people are under the impression a romantic relationship will complete them. Nobody can make you happy, only you can.
Next, you must realize love is not always rainbows and butterflies. Movies these days romanticize relationships. I myself have been at fault by fantasizing about couples like Blair and Chuck from Gossip Girl or Allie and Noah from The Notebook. But, let's face it, they are movies for a reason! Relationships make us completely vulnerable and are not always pretty. I'm not saying relationships don't have their movie like moments, but just know there will be conflicts in any relationship.
Once you come to these realizations, and find the right person, remember to unconditionally love each other.
My parents have been married for 33 years and have faced just about everything together. It gives me comfort in knowing love that strong exists and makes me feel blessed to have been taught about a love like theirs. My advice to you today is don't settle...find somebody that loves you for YOU. And finding that person is so much easier when you actually know who "you" is.
To end this post, here are some of my favorite relationship quotes <3
"Later that day I got to thinking about relationships. There are those that open you up to something new and exotic, those that are old and familiar, those that bring up lots of questions, those that bring you somewhere unexpected, those that bring you far from where you started, and those that bring you back. But the most exciting, challenging and significant relationship of all is the one you have with yourself. And if you can find someone to love the you you love, well, that's just fabulous." - Sex and the City
"The best thing to hold onto in life is each other." - Audrey Hepburn
"Never love anyone that treats you like you're ordinary." - Oscar Wilde
"You don't need somebody to complete you. You only need someone to accept you completely."
